Tourist Sights in Shigatse
Brief Introduction:
The Shigatse area is located at the north west of
Qinghai-Tibet Plain, 182,000 square kilometers, which is the Holy Land of traveling sightseeing, scientific expedition and exploration. Traversing from east to west, Himalayas in the Shigatse area forms the wonderful polar natural scenery, including not only the world highest mountain-Mt. Qomolangma (Mt. Everest), but also four above 8,000 meters mountain peaks and 14 above 7,000 meters mountain peaks. Furthermore, the Garma channel, known as the Ten Top Natural Scenery in the World, gradually reveals its mystical veil with her charming view because of the well exploration in recent years. The Yarlong Tsangpo goes through vertically from
west to east along with various hot springs, fountains, all kinds of lakes, icebergs, the glaciers, the limestone caves and lava spreading between the mountains and plain, varied multi-colors, unpredictable, which enable the travelers lots of surprises. Yangzhuoyong Lake is one of the famous Holy Lakes among thousands of lakes in Tibet, with people to worship in an endless stream. Historical glorious cultural ruins and the colorful minority ethnic culture can be found here. There are wonderful monasteries comparable with those in Lhasa, like Tashilhunpo, Sakya and Shalu. The highlight of Shigatse is surprisingly high snow capped peaks. Most of the highest peaks in Tibet, including Mt. Everest, are around Shigatse, in Shigatse prefecture. This 600-year-old city is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, who is one of the two prestigious spiritual leaders in Tibet and the abbot of the Tashilhunpo Monastery. Recent years, the local government renews and develops lots of traditional festivals, such as Gyangtse horse festival and Shigatse culture festival, which will guide you to appreciate the rich folk custom and culture.
